Xiaomi has surpassed Apple and ranked third in the smartphone brand ranking in terms of shipments. According to the latest data from two companies instead of one of IDC and Counterpoint Research, Apple ranked fourth in the global smartphone market in the third quarter of 2020. At the same time, Samsung has become a top smartphone brand. Total shipments in the third quarter of 2020 will be 79.8 million units. Currently ranked second is Huawei, which has shipped 50.9 million units.

Interestingly, Xiaomi shipped 46.2 million units in the third quarter of 2020, and iPhone manufacturers shipped 41.7 million units during the same period. According to data from Counterpoint Research, Xiaomi has a 13% market share and Apple has an 11% market share. International Data Corporation (IDC) pointed out that smartphone shipments in markets such as India, Brazil, Indonesia, and Russia surged from July to September.

According to IDC Research Director Nabila Popal, this result is due to the stagnation of demand for smartphones after the global blockade began to ease. However, the biggest driving force for sales is large-scale promotions and discounts on smartphones. In India, due to the growing demand for online courses and distance learning, sales of low-end smartphones have increased. As a result, competition in the entry-level smartphone market in India is more intense than ever.

Counterpoint Research revealed that Realme was the fastest brand to lose 50 million units in the third quarter thanks to its affordable 5G product portfolio in China. Realme’s domestic market created the largest sales, with quarterly sales increasing by 90%.

However, despite the significant increase in shipments of some top smartphone brands, the main markets are still weak. This is because Apple has delayed the launch of the 2020 iPhone series. The iPhone 12 series was launched in early October instead of the traditional September release. During this period, the decline in smartphone shipments in markets such as China, Western Europe, and North America represents the iPhone's advantage over other brands of smartphones.
